An asteroid named Apophis is approaching earth. It may strike our planet on April 13, 2036. A group of astronauts, engineers and scientists recently called upon the United Nations to assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it.
Saving our planet from external threats; is this yet another addition to the mandate of the United Nations? You will not find anything about it in the UN Charter. And yet, it seems natural that the United Nations should indeed take responsibility and act. Of course, some nations will do the bulk of the science, but under the umbrella of the UN.
It is interesting to see that even in popular culture, of which Dutch beer commercials are a good example, the United Nations is often seen as the Organization that will eventually come to the rescue. For example, when the content of a glass of beer is missing, and the relevant state is unwilling and/or unable to take effective action.
US should take care of this since it got the money. Russia can’t do much at this time it is losing population and has hardly any money.
If US will actually do this then people will take US people more seriously and probably stop calling them stupid lol.
That’s my opinion I could be wrong.
The UN can’t keep from walking on their lower lip.
The US and Russia has to do this.
