PhD position in the Leiden Institute for History (30,4 or 38 hours per week)

From September 1, 2011, the Institute for History of the Faculty of
Humanities of Leiden University has available a full-time PhD position
(38 hrs) for 4 years or a 0.8 position (30.4 hrs) for 5 years in the
University’s profile area ‘Political legitimacy’. 

Political legitimacy in undemocratic regimes: The Case of Russia

The Ph.D. student is expected to conduct research leading to a Ph.D.
thesis on the issue of (democratic) political legitimacy in undemocratic
regimes, with a special reference to the Russian Federation. The
research aims to trace, explain and compare how ‘democratic’ arguments,
institutions and procedures are being employed, manipulated and
perceived by rulers and electorates in so-called hybrid or
semi-authoritarian regimes, i.e. in political settings which are
essentially authoritarian albeit not without elements of pluralism and
contestation.

Supervisors: Prof. André W.M. Gerrits (History / Russian Studies) and Prof. Ingrid C. van Biezen (Comparative Politics).

Tasks:

  • Writing of a Ph.D. dissertation.
  • Submitting research results for publication in international peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Presenting papers at (international) conferences.
  • Teaching undergraduate course(s) on Russian Politics, normally in the second and third year of the appointment.
  • Active participation in the ‘Political legitimacy’ profile area of Leiden University.

Requirements:

  • A Masters or equivalent degree in a relevant field (e.g. Comparative Politics, Contemporary History, Russian Studies).
  • Research knowledge of modern Russian politics and the Russian language.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written).
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Conditions of employment:

The position of Ph.D. student is temporary for maximally four (1.0) or
five years (0.8). Initially the employee will be contracted for one
year. An extension of three years or four years is possible after
positive evaluation of capabilities and compatibility.

Remuneration will be € 2.042,- gross per calendar month in the first
year, increasing to a maximum of € 2.612,- gross per calendar month in
the fourth year and is in accordance with the current pay scales as
indicated in the “CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten”. An appointment with
Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other
benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year
premium of 8.3%.
