Intern – National Human Rights Institutions
The objective of the Internship Programme of the Department for International Programmes is to give university students and recent graduates with a special interest in human rights issues the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the practical human rights work conducted by RWI in order to complement academic studies in the field and to gain practical work experience.
National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) Unit: RWI is a leading actor in the field of support to NHRIs, with over a decade of experience working to establish and strengthen NHRIs around the world. RWI’s NHRIs programmes are designed to strengthen the capacities of NHRIs to fulfil their mandates to promote, monitor, and protect human rights.
Title: Intern, National Human Rights Institutions Unit
Reports to: Head, NHRI Unit
Timing: 3 to 4 Months
Summary: RWI is seeking an intern to assist the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) Unit on NHRI capacity development projects, related NHRIs initiatives, and on the development and implementation of the Unit’s Operative Plan.
Outline of Role: Under the supervision of the Head of Unit, the NHRI Intern will provide administrative and clerical support and be assigned substantive task and responsibilities contributing to the overall work of the NHRI Unit. In particular, the Intern will be expected to conduct research, draft documents, consolidate and expand in-house NHRI resource materials, and assist as needed in the organization and development of NHRI trainings and workshops. It is also expected that the intern will contribute to the development of the Units 2012 Operative Plan.
Outcome of Internship: The NHRI internship will provide students with the opportunity to develop their professional skills through short-term on the job placement and exposure to the work of the NHRI Unit. The intern will:
• become more familiar with the key role NHRIs play in promoting and protecting human rights and gain a deeper understanding of the mandates, powers and functions of NHRIs,
• gain experience in conducting research in the field of human rights capacity building programmes,
• become more familiar with international capacity development programmes and the role of different international stakeholders working in this field, particularly related to NHRIs.
Qualifications and Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants should be well-organized and self-motivated with excellent drafting skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. Demonstrated interest in research related to human rights is required and some prior research experience highly desirable. Applicants should have experience with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook). Fluency in English is required, and prior knowledge of NHRIs is an asset. The programme primarily targets current students or recent graduates.
