Genocide in World History
Spring 2014
Final Call For Papers

To mark the twentieth anniversary of the Rwanda genocide, The World History
Bulletin is accepting submissions for a forthcoming issue focusing on
genocide in world history under the guest editorship of Phil Cantrell
(Longwood University). Authors may consider all aspects of historical
scholarship, including research, pedagogy, or theory. Course syllabi with
commentary on teaching comparative genocides or genocide in world history
are especially desirable. Interested authors should contact Dr Phil Cantrell
at cantrellpa@longwood.edu.
Authors should keep in mind that the World History Bulletin’s audience is
composed of specialists in a diverse range of historical fields and
periods, in addition to K-12 teachers. Thus, articles should be made as
clear and accessible as possible for this diverse readership. The World
History Bulletin publishes articles of varying lengths; though submissions

interested in contributions of 1,500-3,500 words. The deadline for

CfP: Rwanda 20 Years After: Memory, Justice, and Recovery in the Shadow of Genocide, USA

March 28 & 29, 2014
Weber State University
Ogden, Utah

Call for Papers

On April 7th the world will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda. The genocide itself claimed almost one million lives within 100 days. The aftermath would see an additional one million individuals processed through the gacaca courts and future generations fundamentally altered.

A survey of the literature demonstrates that the analysis and examination of the Rwandan genocide has crossed multiple disciplines, but rarely do they come together to share their insights. This small conference will offer an interdisciplinary forum in which we examine and discuss various facets of the Rwandan genocide, its aftermath, and its impact. We are seeking a broad spectrum of papers and/or panels which relate to some aspect of the 1994 genocide. One goal of this conference will be to publish a selection of papers as an edited collection. CfP: Silence after Violence: Mass atrocities and their aftermaths

May 22 & 23, 2014

An International Workshop sponsored by the Institute for Reconciliation and Justice, the University of the Free State and the Holocaust Studies Center, The University of Vermont
To be held in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Since the 1960s survivors and participants of violence, both mass and individual, as well as bystanding witnesses have been urged “to talk about it”. Increasingly any reluctance to recall and give-witness (note the religious phrasing) about all that had happened is framed as pathological, as a symptom of trauma. It is taken as an indice both of the harm already done as well as having continuing harmful effects in its own right. Silence or arguing for the right and the role of forgetting has been effectively delegitimized, and in some cases strongly advised against. Continue reading

CfP: Transitional justice – does it have a future?

IJTJ Special Issue 2015

The International Journal of Transitional Justice invites submissions for its 2015 special issue entitled ‘Transitional justice: does it have a future?’ to be guest edited by Professor Makau Mutua. Professor Mutua is Dean, SUNY Distinguished Professor, and the Floyd H. & Hilda L. Hurst Faculty Scholar at Buffalo Law School, The State University of New York. Previously, he was the Associate Director at the Harvard Law School Human Rights Program, and the Director of the Africa Project at the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights.

He was appointed by the Government of Kenya as Chairman of the Task Force on the Establishment of a Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission, which recommended a truth commission for Kenya. He serves as the Chairman of the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

It has been more than a quarter of a century since transitional justice burst onto the global stage. Over the years it has come to be billed as a panacea for addressing deeply embedded social and political dysfunction after periods of mass repression and violence. Many theorists and policy makers have argued that it is a key bridge to sustainable peace, democracy, and human rights. Continue reading

CfP: The Future of Holocaust Testimonies III

An International Conference and Workshop
25-27 March 2014, Akko, Israel

Call for Papers

The Holocaust Studies Program of Western Galilee College, Yad Vashem and the Ghetto Fighters House announce a third international interdisciplinary conference and workshop on The Future of Holocaust Testimonies to be held on 25-27 March 2013 in Akko.

Holocaust survivors and their testimonies have been, for many years, prominent in Holocaust memorial culture. As survivors pass away, critical focus inevitably moves to the legacy they leave behind: especially in the forms of written, audio and video testimonies. Scholarly work on survivor testimony is done today in many academic disciplines including history, literary analysis, linguistics, cultural criticism, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, etc. The rich and varied and corpus of testimonies requires the collaborative effort of researchers across disciplines to enable us to hear the voices of survivors articulated through their testimonies.
